With this blog I hope to bring together all the techniques and ideas found around the internet to create a unique Chaos Space Marine tabletop army. There will be some off-topic posts and projects but in the end it will all come together.Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comBlogger12125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-24612792392911345702010-06-11T00:11:00.003-04:002010-06-11T01:25:20.210-04:00Maximizing Deployment
OK, so some of you have seen my previous post on my "Disembarkation Templates" for my Eldar. This is just a spin off of that idea. I am working on my Chaos army and decided to go ahead and make some for my Rhinos. Since I haven't truly picked a Chapter (about 98% sure) there is no iconography on this template. I did borrow my buddies Black Legion squad to fill in for the photo shoot (for the promise of violence and blood shed they work cheap).

The picture above gives you a rough estimate of how I went about measuring for the template. It is really short and sweet with big benefits. That extra 1/4 inch you may short yourself may or may not make the difference, but why take the chance. Maximize your disembarkation and maul the unfortunates on the bad end of this good idea. Below I will post a couple pictures of rear and side exits to give a idea of how much room you have.

Thanks again for reading and hope you like the idea...looking forward to posting the Land Raider templates in the next few weeks.

(Rear Disembarkation)

(Side Disembarkation)

Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-24849159511575547012010-05-28T20:16:00.005-04:002010-06-02T18:51:44.453-04:0040K Spring Tourny 2010

OK, so last weekend we had our 3rd annual "Cincinnati Arsenal 2010 Bash" it was held at the Sharonville Convention Center. As always it was bigger and better than last years more prizes and more space. Thanks to the Organizers and also the Sponsors. We had 50 pre-registered (which was our cap for the space rented) this year with of course a few people who dropped the week of or just decided to sleep in (you all know who you are). The end result was 42 participants with, in my opinion, a pretty varied list of armies. Here is a link of the participants and the scoring for the event, also at the bottom of that page is a break down of the armies that were represented with the overall "Battle Points" for the day.

Again, I want to thank our Sponsors (especially Up, Up, and Away) for the prize support. Next year we are going to try to implement all armies being painted, but these are all about growing the community and meeting new people so if we can get more people here and , more competitive play then we can work on it at a later time. Think of it this way the less armies painted the easier it is to win the Painting Prize.

Thanks everyone for reading, cant wait for next year.

**Side note, I did horrible this year (36th)...should have stuck with the Eldar**

Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-86032572804241197972010-05-24T06:46:00.007-04:002010-05-24T07:15:54.293-04:00Rynns World - Steve Parker

Score: A

Overview:

When the ork hordes of Warlord Snagrod lay waste to the planet of Badlanding and wipe out the Crimson Fists sent to stop them, Chapter Master Kantor prepare a hasty line of defence on the Fists home planet of Rynn's World. Excellent writing kept me involved the whole time. The emotional conflict Chapter Master Pedro Kantor has to deal with after the near destruction of his Space Marine Chapter, to either seek vengeance on the Ork Waaagh and lose the Chapter to history or save whats left of his men and his pride and seek to rebuild, is a dynamic look into the psyche of one of the Emperors finest leaders. There are just enough characters that you are not overwhelmed with dead-end filler stories, but still feel as if these people are part of the story and not just there to take up pages.

(Image and Overview from Black Library)

(IF COMMENTING - NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-49941241937209899022010-05-24T06:34:00.004-04:002010-05-24T07:12:31.886-04:00New Section and Look...sort of.Finally found me a 3 column blog template that I like. I like it because it looks just like my old one and was VERY easy to edit and install all my old stuff. With this added column I am adding a new Section for "Book Reviews". I will give a short excerpt, or even a stolen one, about the books topic and then a short review of what I thought afterward. I encourage people post their thoughts on the book if they have read it, and of course please no spoilers about the books commented on. I don't want to ruin it for others. Most Black Library books can be ho-hum, but as you know if you read enough there can be some exciting fluff that is revealed that wasn't previously known.

Over the next few weeks I will go through my library of books, mostly all 40K novels and post reviews. Hope you check them out and leave comments good or bad about your thoughts.Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-81592024815193238022010-05-06T15:31:00.020-04:002010-05-13T05:28:04.866-04:00Change of Format....This is my first post of 2010 and though it looks like I haven't been doing much in reality I have been busier than ever on the 40K front.

Over the last few years I have aquired a bunch of random Space Marine sprues for cheap or virtually nothing. While inventorying my stocks and cleaning a bit I decided I had enough to build a whole army. This in turn lead to no postings on the old project of my "Word Bearers" chapter and the last blog format. Since the beginning of the year I have played in a couple local tournaments and one national one so building has been limited to weekends here and there.

Now with my Marines being close to completed I figured to keep motivated and updated I would change the format of my "CSM: Word Bearers and Beyond 2009" to "The Black Parade". This new name goes along with my other forum names on my local board (Cincinnati Arsenal Gaming) and more prominent forums (Dakka, Warseer, Cool Mini or Not, etc.). The "Black Parade" will eventually be my Word Beares and in turn Renegade IG (IA-7) armies I am in the process of collecting but until then what this allows me to do is have a blog that is less focused and fill it with more content than just my upcoming armies.

With the new format in place I will try to get more posts up and keep myself up to date. I hopefully will have new ideas and revised ones soon flowing in to keep not only me interested but you also.

My upcoming army for our 2010 Bash (May 22) ...

Crimson Fists: Fire from the Sky (1850)

HQ:
Pedro Kantor - 175
SM Librarian - 140
(Terminator Armor, S. As you can see, and can be confirmed by the people that know me, I am a procrastinator. I will work a solid week on something then get side tracked into something else or not work on anything at all. In the weeks since my last post I have finished work on the first model for my Word Bearers army. I have been working on him for about a month now. Not that it takes that long to assemble and sculpt, in total has taken probably a little over a hour, I just like to evaluate and make tons of notes about what I would like to do for my army and not actually go through the process of executing.

Skip to here if you don't want to hear my excuses of why it takes me so long to get stuff done.....

I was out to lunch with a friend this week and he hit the nail on the head. He said, "The reason Chaos armies are so cool is that you can just go nuts with them". He was right, when building this army I want to go crazy with modification. Now I do want to stay with the history and fluff of the army so I am trying to do my proper research and make sure things are in order.

With each of my squads I want a focal miniature that expresses some flavor. I don't want a whole unit of just crazy stuff that looks mashed together just to say there was a modification. I want this army to blend and flow and not be so outrageous that its a turn-off.

I started out the army with a few simple modifications to practice my greenstuff work. The pictures you see above are still a WiP. The scales need to be smoothed out and blended together a little better, but just to make me feel better I wanted to post up some pictures of him to keep me up to date. I am just starting with this whole blog thing so I need to take more intermediate pictures to explain how I got to where I am with each miniature I post. For now I will just explain and hope to keep it interesting.

I started out with a metal armature going from the bicep to the banner pole. at the end near the pole I made a 90 degree angle and drilled a hole inserting the armature in and gluing it together with superglue.

I then rolled a sausage of greenstuff and smoothed it around the armature and into the point you see at the end that looks kind of like a snake or dragon tail.

Before it dried I used the end of my sculpting knife to create the texture on the bottom of the arm similar to the underbelly of a reptile.

After letting it dry I came back and laid out another sausage of greenstuff along the top of the arm. I then flattened it out with the end of my color shaper into the scales you see on the top.

I came back a few days later...cough.....and sculpted the scales closer to the inside of the arm.

During different times in this process I did work to the icon pole. At the bottom you see two strips of epoxy these were made by just simply cutting out two strands from the epoxy. I know you can't see them in the picture, but I used PVA (white glue) to make rivets. I will probably explain this in a later tutorial or another model. If you want to know how I did it just ask and I will post it is the comments.

Lastly I am still working on finding something to make hoses for the backpacks. I want the texture of guitar wire, but with the tiny spaces I am trying to fill the steel core of the wire just isn't working out. I still need to investigate Nylon guitar wire in hopes that it works, but haven't made it to the music shop yet. Any suggestions are appreciated.

This week I plan to finish up the detail work on the greenstuff and get him cleaned, primed, and ready for paint.

Above is a picture of the sculpting tools I used to get my scales done. Two things about sculpting I want to throw out there. One, tools are EVERYTHING...and two, the hardest part about sculpting is keeping your fingers out of the stuff you have already done. Here is a link the the Color Shapers I have and the other tools are pretty standard in any store.

Again thanks for reading and more to come hopefully sooner rather than later.......Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-35074717478559857842009-08-25T15:19:00.008-04:002009-08-25T16:32:02.669-04:00A Late Night Idea

So I was up late the other night getting things in order for a tournament I have this weekend and came up with this little idea. I have a tendency to just stare at my models sometimes and realized what a pain it is to deploy out of my Wave Serpents because of the angle of the doors. Now I know this has nothing to do with my Chaos project, but hey.....

There may be other posts about this somewhere but I have never come across one so thought I would throw my idea out there about making deployment templates. I always felt that I was screwing myself and that if had just that little bit it would have made a difference. Now during a tournament I can't really take the time to check every model and min/max my deployment. So as not to look like a complete tool by measuring every model or getting frustrated trying to fit a squad of 10 Banshees in the area I made these....

How To:

Material Needed - Plasticard, I used Plastruct 1mm flat but you could probably use whatever.

First I took the Wave Serpent off the base and laid it on a piece of paper. I then marked the corners of the door and then connected the two corners with a strait line (the ramp exit). I then took a compass (measured out 2") and at each corner made a circle till about the center of the doors. Next you need to draw strait lines out 2" from the corners perpendicular to the ramp line and then connect those. After your paper template is made just transfer it to the plasticard and paint it.

Hope you enjoyed this quick little idea, I will be making some for my Rhinos once I get to them built, so really it can be translated to any army transports.Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-85998907091374539612009-08-18T18:19:00.012-04:002009-08-22T00:03:35.959-04:00Tutorial: Mold Making 101

So I posted late last night on the pitfalls of making molds for small bitz for a 40K army. Today I am going to try to explain the process I went through from beginning to end and help anyone else with the learning curve. Let me first say by no means am I a expert in this, but after getting my feet wet I will give what I think are some key mistakes I made the first time around. Just as a side note, I do have a few friends who I will be getting with the first week of October who used to work at the old Ral Partha plant here in Cincinnati before Wizards got a hold of them, so be prepared for Class 102 later in October.

To make this tutorial easier to follow I will post a picture first followed by the explanation of what I did to get to that point and some things to look out for during that step.

It was late when I got around to mounting the shoulder pads and I forgot to take a picture of the "master" so this pic was actually taken after I poured the first part of the silicone. I put this here so you could get a idea of what the first part looked like. Use this pic and the one below to get a idea of what it looked like before I tore it apart with out thinking.

I used a plasticard base and synthetic clay to attach the shoulder pads to the card. The key here is to fill the inner part of the shoulder pad so it gets a good tight seal between the two. You do not want any silicone to leak under when you are pouring the first part of your mold.

Also if you look at the picture below I had a pour hole going down the center of the shoulder pads. In the picture below this is the blue clay you see. Attached to the underside of that is the tube you see left over in the first picture.

Of course when I bought the Lego's it came with the apparently useless single pieces which in my tired state I used as guide posts so when I pour the second part of the mold these will allow me to match up both halves exactly every time. (the lego's are worth it in the long run let me tell you)

After getting everything together I placed the "master" in the mold box. A couple things to remember before doing this...the clay can be messy so make sure you have all the little bits cleaned up on your master pieces. If you don't these will leave textures on your mold and pieces you wont want in your final product. The second thing is to seal the inside of the mold box with the Rubber Latex. It takes a thin coat so no need to go over board.

Mix your silicone according to the manufacture specifications. When you are pouring your mold, pour from one location letting the silicone run over every part so it gets in all the little creases and undercuts.

The key before pouring is to be patient and make sure you have EVERYTHING in place before you mix you silicone. Once it is mixed you have a limited time to pour it before it starts to cure. Any mistakes at this point and you may lose the mix unless it is something minor you missed.

After the first half is cured (approx. 4 hours for the stuff I used), carefully pull everything apart and clean up any flash form the mold. **Important** Do not pull the originals from the mold as you are separating the pieces. These have made a very important seal with the first half that you need intact so when pouring the second half you don't get silicone leaking into your first mold. Again, be patient and be careful.

During this process you need to clean all the clay or any other debris from your part. For my shoulder pads I cleaned out the insides making sure I got all the little tiny particles off the original.

After your mold is cleaned set it off to the side. At this point you need to clean all the excess latex and silicone from your Lego's and the area in general. Once clean make your mold box as the original, but now it needs to be higher with more depth. This will allow you to pour the second half of your mold with out spillage.

Before you start mixing the second half of your mold you need to treat the first half with "Rubber to Rubber" release. If you fail to do this your mold halves will bind together and you will have to cut your original out most likely damaging it and making more waste. Be liberal with the stuff. Put on at least 3 coats making sure you get the edges of your mold even going down the outsides where the two halves will meet. It will not damage your part so don't worry if you get a little excess on your original pieces.

In between applying your mold release you should be re-coating the inside of your mold box with latex again making sure you get the cracks. Depending on the viscosity of the silicone you may not need any latex, but that is your call.

I decided to get rid of the air chamber I formed in the first mold so I removed the tube from part of my pour chamber (i later added this back in, all I had to do was shave off the silicone in that section after it cured). Again the pour for the second is just like the first pour slow and steady and allow the silicone to reach all the areas and undercuts.

Above is the finished mold after carefully removing and separating everything I cleaned it with a soft bristle toothbrush, warm water, and some Dawn dish soap. Be careful during this part as to not damage any of your details of the mold.

Before you start pouring resin into your mold I will note a few things. Look at or look up the viscosity the resin you are using. The viscosity of the Alumilite I used was 190 it had the consistency of motor oil, give or take. The reason I mention this is that your pour chamber and air releases need to be big enough so the weight of your resin can get into all the crevices and undercuts and allow air to push out before it cures.

Also you need to warm up your mold to around 120-140 degrees I did this in the microwave for about 1 min. 20 sec. until it was warm to the touch. The resin uses pressure to get a chemical reaction going, and with the tiny amounts of fluid for parts you have to pre-warm your mold to help get this action to occur.

When I poured my first batch I made a pretty big mess as all my resin backed up because I didn't leave enough room for the air to push itself out. The weight of the resin was just to much. This is why I not only opened the air shaft but also cut the pour chamber deeper and wider. The silicone is real easy to work with and a Xacto knife goes a long way. As a side note all this stuff makes a real mess if you screw something up or are not careful, but just let it all cure and none of it actually sticks to anything so clean it up at a later time not while it is still soft.

Just like with the silicone mold mixes before you get all giggity-giggity make sure you mold is dry. Having even the slightest water bead will ruin that part of the mold pour and the surrounding area.

Mix your resin according to the manufacture specifications. Remember you have a very short time to get the mold poured and get the air to release. Burb the mold by squeezing it and try to get the bubbles to the surface. Let it cure for the required amount of time and then separate it and see what you got.

I noted each part of my mold and what each shoulder pad looked like to see if I could fix any mistakes from previous batches..

The picture above is my very first batch as you can see the first one has a large hole in it. This came from not getting enough resin in that particular chamber. At first I threw it away then pulled it back out thinking of the positive and realizing now I didn't have to sculpt some acid spray damage. The first mold I would say was about 40% successful, but with the quick cure times of resin you can make a ton. Just try to learn form the previous batch until you get it the way you want it.

Some things I will change in the future will be to find a lower viscosity resin (around 90) with a longer pot life. It was tough managing everything and getting everything just right to make it work out.

Thanks in advance for reading this please leave any comments to help me adjust or make it better. Hope you enjoyed reading this and it has helped you out or at least made you aware of the possibilities of molding. Any adjustment I make at a later date will be posted in blue to help you better find anything that may have changed.

Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-32457216492627497802009-08-17T23:42:00.012-04:002009-08-25T15:18:57.465-04:00The Pitfalls of Doing Your Own Molds...

OK, so I took a 3 month hiatus from 40K to do other things (non-game related). So I figured what the hell I will jump in feet first and start molding my own bitz. This idea first came to me when I figured out the price to order just the shoulder pads from GW needed to get my army the way I want it. I did my research (or so I thought) on what it would take to mold these items along with lets say some custom plasma guns, combi-weapons, heads, etc... well on the front end it all seemed so easy to do and pretty cost efficient. This article here is to help all those budding young craftsmen avoid or at least be aware of some of the back end costs of making your own bitz.

First my estimated price for bitz for Phase 1 was about $180.00. For a completely unique army I am thinking not to bad, but more than I really want to spend. So here goes:

Starter Molding Kit (Alumilite): $70.00

Great kit in my opinion. Has enough silicone to make the mold you see in the post about my first molding experience, but really not much else of any size. I knew going in it wasn't much but truly wasn't sure what it would make. (Molding tutorial will be posted later)

Electronic Scale (Office Depot): $45.00

Now this investment I was not planning on. After sitting home reading the instructions for mixing molds and such I realized that although you use volume to figure out how much Silicone you need it is actually mixed by weight. Now you can get less expensive scales but a few things to consider....you need one that will measure grams. Also it must be sensitive, mixing such low weights some scales have a hard time picking up the change. Don't scrimp on the scale if you get your mixes wrong you will pay for it later when your molds don't come out right and you are wasting material.

Lego's (Toys R Us): $30.00

So if you do your research about making mold boxes you will note that there are a bunch of ways to make these. If you are trying to save a little $$ on the front end you can forgo these. I opted for Lego's because they are reusable and they clean up really easy after you are done. I also bought one of the 6x6 mats for it. Doing that gives me some room to work with a little spillage area in case something goes wrong or gets knocked around.

Latex Rubber (Woodland Scenics): $13.00

Again another investment I was not prepared for until I started reading. So the Silicone does not leak through the Lego's you need a sealer for the inside of your mold box. You don't need much just a thin coat so the bottle you get from Woodland Scenics will last a long time.

9 Volt Battery (Office Depot): $8.00

Because I forgot to read the box for the scale, second trip to office supply store (gas not included in price batteries are just that freaking expensive).

Mixing Cups, Stir Sticks (Hobbytown USA): $7.00

The stuff that comes with the starter kit is no where near enough to make a go at it so be prepared and just buy more up front (this will help you alleviate the next issue). You may want to pick up some 8oz. plastic cups they seem to be ok for mixing these smaller molds. Stay away from Styrofoam cups as you stir they may shed tiny particles into your mold mix.

All the crap you don't need: $120.00

This is all the stuff you had no intentions of buying but couldn't do with out as you walked through the store. Don't tell me you can just get what you need, you are a LIAR !!

So as you can see minus the last one the total investment is $166.00. There really is no savings unless you plan on doing a large project or you are planing on hacking up a bunch of models for conversions. Now really on the first phase I am not making any money and probably after paper towel, cleaning supplies, and time invested where I could actually be working on something else I am in the red.

The silver lining to this little project is that when I get a little better at it I wont be wasting time modeling combi-weapons, shoulder pads, icons, skulls, spikes, etc...I can just make a mold of these and have them in my bitz box ready to use.

To wrap this up I am about 50/50 on how it goes it is fun to do something new, but if you are looking to save money by making molds give it up. I know you can probably cast a whole marine and save a bunch of money there, but really with the look of most armies now who wants to go back to second edition and have 3/4 of your models with the same pose.

Part 2: Mold Making 101
Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-46887906118229266592009-02-19T20:56:00.009-05:002009-02-20T00:08:02.754-05:00NecromundaSo its been a while since we pulled out the Necromunda gear, but if you have ever played the game you know it is hard to stay away from. It came up in our local gaming forum with one of the newer guys asking if anyone has ever played. Having brought back all the memories of the mighty gangs and their expeditions through the Underhive, a few of us veterans decided to get together to relive the days of old. So with all that said this Friday (2/20) we are going to start a little friendly Necromunda league. We have in total three veteran players and three new player, two of which play 40K and the other just fantasy.

With my gang I am going the route of low upkeep with the addition of a couple extra muscle to make up for lack of numbers. I am a union Sprinklerfitter so I have based this gang off some of the Fitters and Apprentices that I have worked with in the past. My Ratskin is a guy who went scab after a year in the trade, and one of the Scummers is named after the superintendents son who is a complete tool.

SIX-SIX-NINE:
V.A. Not sure that there is a theme per se, so if I decide I want to change affiliation it will be as easy as starting a new gang on paper.

Gang Leader:
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBz8tGm9qL5TB9gL6EfQBZtb4JIG4uP95_6iputqWkLzQks5FTo7RyIMCQ9kY5n63Jr38oxVSpHeFg5rR-_gQb_9Y4E54wGc3iyiiJWgqshEU7mfTAKNVl7YtYWguwRnFuOSbN9zsID5eM/s320/Paint+Project+073.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304731720884272194" />

Heavy:
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc0bx6Dcu5_9OCdUgOED7tRX7YFHtS051VDcepEqS0obk2QWAHTsVG-OPb1egSBvm6qpQlx6Ny0bfdZwxUbzNzW7_Ef8zXI4WIR1iA67HDsjz5aqkVNeYfQswAB32M1eG48fWrzs4Fc1QG/s320/Paint+Project+077.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304732817751666258" />Afflictionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15298725212227536992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908929528463932331.post-49166152638498597212009-02-17T13:16:00.004-05:002009-02-17T14:00:57.814-05:00In The Beginning...Well I have to start somewhere so below is my proposed army list that I will build my army from. I am sure in the coming weeks and months it will change but for now this is my starting point.

In our local gaming club Cincinnati Arsenal Gaming we have been playing 1750 point games for a while. Actually in May we have our annual tournament CAG '09 Bash in which I will be playing my 1750pt. Eldar army (I will post a update for that when it comes around). Anyway back to my original thoughts...I think that 40k is more balanced with armies that hover around 1200-1500 points. So with that in mind I have talked to a few people and we are going to scale back to the 1500pt. mark to see if the games are a little more fun and exciting.

This army is not a super competitive list, but it does follow the fluff of the Word Bearers and allows me to assemble and paint different style models. I am sure I will get comments on using Greater/Lesser Demons in my army, but hey I like them and they are a variable that causes me to think and could change the flow of battle not only in my favor but also in the favor of my enemy. Such is the fickleness of Chaos. This is pretty much a strait Undivided army. Later I will add squads with different marks making this a more versatile and deadly army, but for now this is just a fun list to paint and play.

HQ:
Chaos Lord - 155pts. (Demon Weapon, Melta Bombs, Wings)
Summoned Greater Demon - 100pts.

Elite:
Chosen [7+Aspiring Champion] - 239pts. All though long, I will not go in-depth with the history just touch the surface a bit to give you a little insight and understanding of the Chapter. I will assume that you have a little back history of the 40k universe and its workings.

Overview:
The Word Bearers are the 17th Chapter founded by the Emperor. Their armor is painted a dark crimson with gunmetal trim. The Legion symbol is a horned daemon skull occasionally with a burst of flames behind or below it. They are one of the nine Space Marine Legions which betrayed the Emperor during the Horus Heresy, becoming Chaos Space Marines, their allegiance pledged to their Primarch Lorgar and to Chaos as a whole. Also noted to have been the first legion to be corrupted by chaos and brought about the Horus Heresy in its entirety.

Primarch:
The Primarch of the Word Bearers, Lorgar, vanished while still an infant, just like all of the other Primarchs. He was discovered on a Feudal World named Colchis, which he had eventually unified in a series of brutal religious wars in response to his visions of the Emperor's coming arrival. When the Emperor did arrive, as Lorgar had foreseen, the Primarch dropped to his knee, leading the population of his world in rejoicing and worship of the Emperor as a god. At the conclusion of these festivities, the Emperor bade Lorgar take his best warriors and induct them into his Space Marine Legion and join him on the Great Crusade. Lorgar appointed trustworthy regents to rule over Colchis and devoutly complied with his father's direction.

Lorgar was an unusually pious Primarch. While other Legions were rapidly conquering planet after planet, the Word Bearers proceeded much more slowly, as they would build temples and shrines in veneration of the Emperor, who was also deemed the God of the Imperium by Lorgar, on each newly conquered planet. All forms of blasphemy and heresy that threatened the Emperor's realm, all manner of ancient scrolls, books, artworks and icons were burned and smashed before the advancing ranks of the Legion. In their place, vast monuments and cathedrals, all dedicated to the Emperor, were erected upon the mounds of dead of those who had resisted conversion. The greatest Chaplains of the Legion produced enormous works on the divinity and righteousness of the Emperor, and Lorgar himself delivered countless speeches and sermons, converting millions to the Emperor with his words alone.

However, the Emperor became impatient with the Word Bearers, and ordered them to cease this activity, as their mission was to reunify the galaxy under the Imperial banner, not preach of the Emperor's personal divinity. Lorgar is said to have been stunned by this reproach, and to have fallen into a melancholic state. Feeling betrayed, he refused audience to all but Kor Phaeron, his lieutenant and ally since Colchis. Kor Phaeron sympathized with Lorgar, and felt that the Word Bearers should serve Gods truly worthy of worship. What's more, he knew of such gods. And thus, Lorgar discovered the Chaos Gods, who not only accepted zealous worship, but in fact demanded it. Thus the seeds of heresy were sown, and when Horus turned against the Emperor in the name of Chaos, the Word Bearers quickly joined the rebellion, and the worlds they had conquered since their conversion also joined, having been secretly corrupted by the Word Bearers.

The Horus Heresy:
When the Word Bearers launched their attack against the Ultramarines, the strike against Calth was led by Lorgar's greatest champion, the former Master of the Faith, Kor Phaeron. He swore to utterly destroy the planet, and was very nearly successful. From his personal battle barge, now renamed Infidus Imperator, Kor Phaeron directed a full-scale invasion of the Calth System. Calth's three sister planets were all destroyed, massive geo-nuclear strikes ripping them apart at the core. Its once gentle sun was laced with deadly metals and substances that increased the star's radiation output tenfold; within a century after the Heresy's end, the final elements of Calth's atmosphere were burned off and the world left airless, its populace forced to live in gigantic underground caverns.

Lorgar himself lead the rest of his Legion against Terra, where he helped smash down the realm of the master he had once served with the fanaticism of a zealot. In the end, Horus was defeated, and the legions of Chaos were forced to flee. The Word Bearers were also forced to retreat to the Eye of Terror, and there they have remained, returning to the Imperium to raid, pillage, and destroy.

Organizations:
Word Bearers do not worship Chaos Gods individually. Instead, they are venerated and regarded as a Dark Pantheon of Chaos Gods. Word Bearers rely on Daemons as shock troops, meatshields, and as the bulk of their armies. Their elite Chaos Space Marines are used to accomplish vital tasks. The Word Bearers have been known to have a massive cultist base, and have used cultists and insurgents since the Great Crusade. However, unlike the Alpha Legion, they use cultists as cannon fodder and distractions, not as spies, infiltrators, saboteurs, or political tools.

The Word Bearers are notable for being the only Traitor Legion who still have a corps of Chaplains, now known as Dark Apostles. The Word Bearers follow the words of their Dark Apostles with total faith in battle. The Dark Apostles divine through many ways how a battle is to be fought and won, and the warriors of the Host obey unquestioningly. Before battle, the Word Bearers gather in ritual prayer, chanting hymns and cult doctrine to affirm their faith in the power of Chaos. Often these chants will be answered and it is common for the Word Bearers to fight alongside daemonic entities.

The largest known Host numbered over two thousand Chaos Marines at its peak. The size of this force required that the Dark Apostle be served by two chief lieutenants, his First Acolyte and a champion, entitled as the Coryphaus.
